May 23, 2018 - California Dreamin' - Double Blind - Zin/PS/Cab - 70's - 2009: Brief Notes - part of a larger blind tasting. In a Petite Sirah flight with an 01 Teldeschi, 73 Freemark Abbey, and 08 Turley Hayne, this was middle of the pack. Still fairly dark in color with some bricking, and as expected, mostly secondary characteristics on the nose and palate. Leaves, earth, dirt, and some slight red fruits. Nice enough wine, and always fun to pop a bottle of this age acquired at auction and have it show well.

November 5, 2016 - Wow, what a nice surprise. I was beginning to think old Cali petite sirah was a dubious proposition-- even if it survived the decades, did it improve? Was it ever that good really? Well, this '72 was a delight. Earthy and ancient, yet with plenty of mentholated fruit. The tannins have (in a minor miracle) resolved, leaving a nuanced, suave red wine worthy of introspection. Very nice.

November 3, 2016 - Intact cork and perfect fill. Dusty and old smelling at first but quickly freshens up to show dried blackberry, coffee grounds, a touch of vanilla all over a polished body of tannin. Great "inner sweetness" here, and the more you drink the more it harmonizes and shows a really graceful side. Who'd have ever thought???

August 30, 2012 - Fantastic bottle. At its prime! No bricking, great red color. Fabulous bouquet from the moment it was poured. Dark/red fruit, a bit smokey. Great mouth feel, smooth and well balanced at 40 years old!
