June 3, 2022 - I found this on my cellar. Not sure how I’d missed it.
Still has a nice nose. While I’m sure the wine has seen its best days with its recommended drink by date some years ago we were far from disappointed.
It was very smooth and drank well.

November 30, 2014 - (Dinner at Joh's) Dark effusive plums, violets, graphite and mossy sousbois, along with aged leather and fine pepper. Gentle, elegant, yet concentrated, clean and stylish. Drinking beautifully, lined with velvet tannins, soft spices and some bright acidity. Easy drinking and ending clean and savoury. Beautifully styled and paired nicely with Wendy's Pasta Alfredo!

February 9, 2010 - William's Somewhat Old Shiraz - a Penfolds Magill Estate vertical and some extras (Culina, Dempsey Hill): Back to form after a disappointing flight - this wine was very differently styled from the 80s' Magills, but very good nonetheless. Nose was very interesting, with dusty, dried earth notes melded with dusky plums seasoned with nice spice notes. The palate had plenty of quality as well. By far the most masculine of the wine we tried, there was a touch of savoury meatiness running through rich, ripe plum and spice notes, quite a bit of glycerol, but all held in superb balance by well-integrated acidity and smooth tannins. The finish had decent length, the longest, but with a nice clean showing of fruit, spice and earth. A classy, well-controlled wine.

May 3, 2009 - Nearly decided not to take this to dinner because it took three hours for some slightly off odours to blow off. I learnt something new today in that a good aged wine does not always have a big nose. This had a subtle nose of honeycomb, earth and coffee. In the mouth there was toffee apple, mushroom, some meat, Kona coffee and great height. Well-balanced with a subtle long finish of 75 seconds. Perhaps past its best but still has significant tannins which haven't wholly softened. Memorable wine experience though.

February 6, 2006 - NobleRottersSydney - Old Penfolds night (Guillaume at Bennelong): {cork, 13.5%} A distinct shift in style here [from the Bin 389s]. The colour is a distinctly lighter shade, although the restaurant light is now dim enough that colour judgments are useless. The nose is of elegant cherry notes, lightly spiced, with a hint of lifted volatility. The palate is quite spicy and acidic. The moderate weight sits mostly on the middle palate, with a moderate length finish. There’s no real lack of ripeness in this tricky vintage, but it falls short of being a truly memorable wine.
