    June 1, 2015 - Fabulous at age 10!

November 19, 2012 - 2005 Syrah Tasting: Aromas of almost jammy dark fruit, but also with savory meat and herbal notes. Gripping tannins with medium acidity with roasted fruit and vanilla on the palate. Hot finish. Not one of my favorites nor many others.

February 9, 2011 - Looks like this is still a slow opener. Last glass on night two was the best.

February 4, 2011 - Popped and poured. Lots of fruit up front but a little weak on the midpalate. The last glass was the best, so maybe a short decant for the next bottle. Very good.

June 20, 2010 - This wine needed 24 hours to shed the chocolate and perceived sweetness that it shows when I opened it last night--it's much better tonight. As a whole, this wine tastes dark, with some black cherry and earthy blackberry notes. Not syrupy in terms of the dark fruit but more lithe and crunchy. This fruit quality is one of the expressive profiles I find in CA syrah: dark and inky, but more zesty and earthy. It lies in the middle, in essence, between old world and new, and with that, I am going to drink it with some homemade pizza tonight, to add to the food not overtake it. There is a hint of ripeness on the back end of the finish but the zesty and dark quality of the fruit merely takes the ripe edge in and allows it to enhance what is there. Like with Garys' so often for me, there is some jerky and teriyaki notes, too, but these are once again supporting of the inky fruit. In sum, this wine will age and I think in doing so, it might appeal even more to the CA syrah cynic and the argument against what some typify as CA syrah. Drink now or age through 2011 and let some of the secondary notes emerge, which I think might create a very interesting cuvee. This, though, is my last 2005 so the 2006s will go next.
