May 25, 2017 - Opened 1 hour before serving-Better bottle than the last one. Showing more acidic lift and fruit. That said, the tannins are still quite strong and are out competing the fruit at the moment. I would recommend with food.

May 19, 2017 - Drank after decant and over the course of 2 hrs. Dull ruby-garnet in the glass. Fine sediment, with bricking and edge showing violet and blue at the rim.

First tasting: Rich honeysuckle, prune, orange leaves and rosewater florals on the nose. Smooth front palate shows red fruit bright acidity. Relatively closed mid palate brings forward round tannins and mild pucker through the finish. Back palate shows oak but is a little thin and doesn't have its heart into it, like an aging courtesan with f-you money. May be past her prime, but don't dare speak a word of it or she'll cut you.

Second tasting: Nose is starting to sing from the glass, plums, cassis, sandalwood and black fruit. Acid on the front palate is still present, but mid palate now shows deep blue-black fruit, leather mixed with silky tannins and a longer, more sultry finish. A much denser mouthfeel with real structure, almost merlot-like weight through the finish. Damn she sexy.

May 16, 2017 - 2nd of 24, pnp, perfect level, odd smell to cork, not as good as Feb bottle, diminished, slightest taint (?), still VG (16).

April 19, 2017 - PNP: Tasted a bit flat. Prune and earth flavor with low acid. Will see if this improves with air time.

Day 2 after vacuum seal. Flat some stewed prune flavor. Bad bottle?

February 26, 2017 - 1st of 24 (+ 6 magnums), pnp, perfect cork and level, deepish, glossy red, notably viscous, little development; muted nose, cherry, some leather, tobacco and earth; fullish, long and persistent, reasonably concentrated, harmonious if without any strong personality, nice touch of heat of south not the vintage, barely ready and a tad bland as yet. F (17.5).

Rockss and Fruit

(Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape) This was a victim of this horrendously hot and dry vintage. Jammy, black and overripe fruit. Some heat showing and just tasted like liquid raisins. That's what happens when you harvest raisins, you get raisin juice. I love Beaucastel but not this year.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) Very dark on inspection, and a touch glossy even. Very typical of 2003 on the nose, rather than of Beaucastel, emitting the same roasted confit cherry fruit I have also found in Tuscany and Bordeaux when tasting or drinking this vintage. Notes of black pepper too, perhaps the Syrah showing through? Rich and creamy, perhaps unsurprisingly, with lots of extract, texture and substance. Rather a touch of bitter cherry here, on the edge, but still a broad, mouthfilling, ripe and rich style. Loads of structure. Grippy finish. The palate is very typical of the vintage too, then! I am unsure as to how this one will develop.

(Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Big ripe cherry, hint of licorice, vanilla nose; nice plush entry, sweet ripe fruit, with good sous bois; medium-plus finish 93+ pts.

(Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape) Sharp nose of pungent plum with floral notes and a hint of something savory; tasty ripe plum and cherry palate; medium tart cherry finish 92+ pts.
