June 1, 2017 - Looking back at my notes from 18 months ago, I don't know that my opinion has changed much. The wine had ripe fruit, but it also had an alcohol taste that once faded left nothing exciting in the wine. The wine is not terrible, but it seems out of balance. I would agree with other reviews that this wine just misses it, and I am a fan of both CdP and Vieux Telegraphe. Perhaps it just needs more time?

May 23, 2017 - A Mixed Bag at Young Joni (Young Joni, NE Mpls): Very dark red/purple color. PNP, followed one glass over an hour. The nose is ok, spice, subtle garrigue, red licorice, with muted brooding dark fruit. The palate is where this falls apart for me. Whether this is in CDP no man's land between the early drinking window and the more mature window; or hopefully the slow, plodding evolution of what is VT is just yet to come. However, my fear is this is not going to go the route of an aging beauty, but instead unravels amidst the alcohol and oak on the palate. I not sure the the syrupy dark ripe fruit can last against the harsh woody opposition. Maybe I'm being harsh, but the lack of balance made me wince.

May 23, 2017 - David's btl. Tonight this wine wasn't working for me. It came off as jammy, loaded with alc and not my thing. Perhaps if it had seen a good 1 hour + decant and a lower cellar type temp, I'd like it better? Also, I find these have a fighting chance of being tasty if drank closer to low cellar temp. Tonight's btl was opened at the restaurant and drank at the mid to high 60s. Wasn't feeling it. I continue to lose my CDP mojo.

May 21, 2017 - Needs more time before it reaches its peak, although still is a fine wine especially when paired with food.

(Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape) A cherry pink-red hue in the glass. Often when tasted at this stage in its evolution I have found Vieux Télégraphe to be rather simple in its aromatics, but this wows me with wild notes of garrigue and aromatic herbs on top of the usual sweet fruit. It has a very soft entry onto the palate despite this, but then reveals a well composed supple melding of ripe tannins, well covered by fruit, with a good acid backbone as well. There is true character here too. Great potential, a fine vintage for the Bruniers I think.
