    October 6, 2014 - WIML92

    Tasted non blind.

Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of thistle, menthol, black berries, black raspberries and plums. Flavors of black berries, black cherries, plums and raspberries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold.

September 26, 2014 - This is a first rate traditional Chateauneuf bottle, plenty of mouth filling red fruit notes with a good finish, but the cost is way up there for a traditional basic cuvee. For many years my benchmark Chateauneuf was the 1978 Vieux Telegraphe, but I think they have fallen behind perhaps for two reasons. First, unlike other producers, and you can love it or hate it, they haven't stripped out the best of their cuvees to produce a large volume luxury cuvee. Standard procedure today with virtually every other Chateauneuf producer. This wine is really good, but it is isn't in the ballpark with the luxury cuvees of Usseglio, etc., all pretty much in the same price range or less. And second, their basic problem may be the age of their wines. For whatever reason, their web site acknowledges that in comparison with many other Chateauneuf producers, the age of their vines is relatively young.
Bottom line if you will, you can buy a better stripped out luxury cuvee from many other Chateauneuf producers for less or the same price that you now pay for Vieux Telegraphe, and get more.

September 24, 2014 - Very slightly disappointed with this bottle. An outstanding mature nose of dark fruits and forest notes. Good entry, but the mid palate and the finish were a both slightly astringent and a bit deficient in fruit. Still an excellent bottle, and it works well with food, but I was hoping for just a bit more given the vintage and the producer and my previous bottles. Hoping this was just slightly off and that the fruit and full balance will come back.

September 23, 2014 - I haven't had a VT in many years, but I remember them being very different than other CdP's, and this doesn't change my perception in this regard. Here I get a little bit of ripe fruit, some sour cherries, and funk. I like this stuff, and I'm looking forward to the '06 and the '07.

September 19, 2014 - Drinking beautifully. Elegant lighter body style CDP. Wish I had more to taste over next decade.

(Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf du Pape) A cherry pink-red hue in the glass. Often when tasted at this stage in its evolution I have found Vieux Télégraphe to be rather simple in its aromatics, but this wows me with wild notes of garrigue and aromatic herbs on top of the usual sweet fruit. It has a very soft entry onto the palate despite this, but then reveals a well composed supple melding of ripe tannins, well covered by fruit, with a good acid backbone as well. There is true character here too. Great potential, a fine vintage for the Bruniers I think.
