July 17, 2022 - 16 Mature Bordeaux Magnums 1945/47/55/59 (+Unico): Three 1945s, all from magnum. Winner was the Gruaud Larose (94+ pts) which showed very classic with all telltale aromatics, an impeccable structure, good tension, just missing a touch of complexity. Still young-ish, this was like the little brother of the 1982. Next was the Margaux (92 pts) which showed so elegant and ethereal but lost its structural integrity some time ago. The Nenin (NR) was unfortunately corked but showed impressively powerful underneath.

TN: Medium+ expressive nose with ripe dark berries, herbs and some spices, some cola and faint tobacco nose. Pleasant nose but not exceptional at first but getting better and more expressive by the minute. On the palate this is soft and round, missing tension. The structure is gone. The aromatics are fine with tobacco and some truffles, some crushed rocks and wet earth. All in all quite pleasant and improving with time in the glass but not more than 91/92 pts as this bottle clearly lacked power, tension and verve.

Decanting: Double decanted 2+ hours before the tasting.

July 2, 2022 - Richter Magnum Rarity Tasting (Zunfthaus zur Waag, Zurich): Tasted at a grand magnum rarities tasting hosted by a merchant and collector in Zurich. Most bottles were Bordeaux from the 40s and 50s. The top 3 wines 1. Cheval Blanc 1955 (98), 2. Ausone 1959 (97), 3. Haut-Brion 1955 (95). Full list of wines sorted by score and additional observations included in the tasting story.

    Tasting notes
This had a malty feel to it. Fine aging notes of sous-bois, leather, tobacco and dried leaves surrounding a nice and refined red fruit core. Some smoke and savory notes add to the bouquet. But rather low intensity and palate thinned down, mostly leaving acidity. The little bit of structure that was left helped to keep things together just enough to make it work.

July 2, 2022 - Annual Richter All-Magnum Extravaganza: Red berries, some chalk, restrained and elegant, if not to say a bit on the slim side

May 6, 2022 - From an excellent looking bottle with a HS fill, this was clearly authentic. It had a great cork and The deep red center and light orange rims suggested this was in great shape.

The medium+ intensity nose offered up clove, black cherries, roasted meat, and minerals. In the mouth, this wine was incredibly refined but also quite powerful with rounded tannin, firm acidity, great length, and a huge blast of fruit.

    This bottle was the bomb!

May 8, 2021 - From a bottle with a top shoulder fill and a tattered label, this wine had a deep red center and orange rims. The medium+ intensity nose showed roasted figs, cherries, minerals, forest floor, and a touch of VA.

In the mouth, this wine was gorgeously balanced with light tannin, crisp acidity and great length. It was fruity, refined, yet firm and serious all at the same time.

There was just a little bit of a burnt character that held this bottle back from a higher score. It may have been briefly mistreated somewhere in its journey. However, it was still impressive and certainly ready to drink!
