July 3, 2021 - An upper shoulder bottle bought a few months ago along with the 1967 drunk earlier this week. Both bottles clearly well kept in the same conditions with good labels and corks that came out whole with the butlers friend. This cork more saturated. Good fruit with a leathery flavour. An interesting comparison. The 70 is darker and has a lot more fruit. Both finishes are good and long. Despite being a better vintage with more fruit and well integrated with soft tannins the 1970 lacks the perfume and charm of the 1967. Celebrating delivery of the Oscar India.
April 27, 2017 - On the nose: Stable, leather, lead
On the palate: Tartaric acid, leather, stable.
Medium finish
Well the wine is well made but the 47 years has made it marks.
November 20, 2016 - Medium tawny colour. The nose shows pronounced intensity aromas of tobacco leaf, forest floor, ashes, cedar and hints of plums jam and very ripe cherries.
The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium+ refreshing acidity. It has medium+ soft tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium+ body with pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long.
It is an outstanding quality wine. It has a lingering finish and a remarkable fruit concentration well-balanced by the freshness provided by the acidity and the tannic structure. It also shows complexity provided by oak and bottle ageing.
October 12, 2014 - After 30 minutes it was probably an 86 and I gave up on it. 3 hours later it may have moved into the low 90s. So give this wine plenty of time to decant
September 22, 2013 - Drank alongside a '70 Chateau Batailley. The Leoville did not show as well as the Batailley. Very muted aromas of black currant and dark wild cherries. More fruity on the palate - black berries and tart cherries. Quite a bit of acidity on the back palate which give the wine an unpleasant sour note on the thankfully short finish. Definitely years past its prime.
August 3, 2013 - Cork was soaked through with a little mold under the foil cap. Wine was thin garnet in color. No fruit on the nose - only earthiness, wet field, and oily leather. Tasting confirmed our suspicion that the wine was past - thin, acidic and undrinkable.
July 25, 2012 - Kahns "Look What We Found" Tasting Event (Seasons 52, Indianapolis): My opening wine of the night. A complex wine that included strong minerality, floral elements, mild cassis, and strawberry. No tannins were evident, possibly beginning decline but still a lovely and complex wine.
August 10, 2010 - Biskuit is right. The Barton was outperformed by the '70 Lanessan in the glass next to it.
August 9, 2010 - Yep, gone, green and flat
June 12, 2010 - Past its prime, a shame.
