March 15, 2014 - Private Dinner (New York, NY): Opened December 22, 2013. What happened in 1850? Zachary Taylor died in office; Los Angeles and San Francisco were incorporated as cities; American Express was founded. Oh, and the grapes for this Madeira were grown and harvested. This was more about the experience of drinking something 164 years old than the organoleptic properties (some orange rind, roasted nuts, acid and sugar keeping one another in check). Rated 1 on a scale of -1 to 3.

January 10, 2014 - Quick taste. Very clean, brilliant, beautiful. Extremely perfumed, a pleasure to sniff, tremendously complex: honey, perfume, old furniture. Super-rich yet ethereal palate with lots of acetone and spice. Very-very long. Seemed much sweeter than more modern verdelhos yet the sweetness was quite mild and mellow.

April 13, 2012 - Tasted at D'Oliveira's cellar door. A shame to taste it in such a rushed setting, tasting it alongside the 1875 Malvazia and 1908 Boal in quick succession. No formal notes taken, but from memory the structure was impeccable and grand - flowed from toffee, ginger, burnt sugar, with a distinct acid spine prominent throughout. Acidity prominent to the end, tremendous length.

While a fantastic verdelho, I don't believe it is "better" than a lot of the 20th century verdelho and one pays for the opportunity to drink a 19th century wine. Still a great wine though.
