August 14, 2014 - Dunkles purpurrot; an der Nase komplexes, tiefes Aromenspiel von Bitterschokolade, Kirsch- und Beerenkompott, Würznoten; am Gaumen vollmundig, Massen an feinem, fast süßlichem Tannin, reichlich Säure, langer Abgang; vollreifer Jahrgang, leicht alkohollastig

July 28, 2014 - delicious. big, bright intense fruit. full in the mouth; dark red. plenty of acidity to cut through the plum/cherry fruit. tannins are soft and a long finish. great with my tri tip!

May 2, 2014 - Dark purple, Rich, ripe cherries/cranberries, tart not sweet, some burnt/charcoal/olive, full body, good acid, no oak detected. A little heat. Excellent concentration, seemingly a wine from a ripe warm vintage.

April 29, 2014 - This wine still flaunts it's youth. Thick, black, purple to the light, only grudgingly yielding to a dark garnet at the very edge.

The nose has morphed significantly since my last tasting, being more open, and showing off more candied red and black fruits now, some black tea, red meat, and some spices and eucalyptus.

On the palate, definitely getting some rare Kobe beef, soy sauce, spices, umami, and dark chocolate, all accompanied by exciting acidity. The acidity was very prominent in my last tasting, but is starting to fall in line nicely now, providing a better balance.

The finish is delightful - the initial taste rocks hard, which is then upstaged by mouth watering mandarin and red fruit notes, which then settle into fruity tannins that are incredibly fine. Medium to long.

The wine is starting to develop some sediment now, and is not as thick as before. My guess it will reach its best in the next 3 to 5 years. I'm going to revise my window a little, as I'm not sure it'll hold till 2027. But I'll still save some to the very end just out of curiosity.

April 5, 2014 - A Flight of 2005 CDPs: The 2005 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape is dark purple in colour with a herbaceous nose of tea leaves, slight cinnamon, dried raisins, sour cherries and slight vanilla notes.

On the palate, the wine lies strongly on its herbaceous palate and is rather dark and smoky. Dark raisins persists alongside sour cherries. A bit of a barnyard finish. A tad bit of weight there, but the wine is rather 'all over the palate'. I'm not too sure if this can sustain and develop well in the years to come.
