September 19, 2014 - My first bottle of hillside select. Very ripe and fruit forward. Almost Shiraz like and verging on overdone. Blueberry and violets. Not my preferred style of cab sav but enjoyable and well made. Will hold off a few more years on remaining bottles in the hope it mellows.

July 20, 2014 - Screagle, Kapcsandy, SHS, Abreu, Maybach, Donnhoff, etc., etc. (Downtown Cleveland): What a great winery. Every bottle flirts with perfection. Sometimes I think because it hits perfection 2 or 3 times a decade the wines scoring only in the high 90's don't get the respect they deserve. This was amazing. The WOTN for many. The nose has cassis, pencil lead, tea leaves and some vanilla. On the palate, lovely texture. seamless. Cassis, complex layers of earth and fruit, medium silky tannins. Long finish. This bottle had been slow oxed for 12 hours and I think that worked well. even then, it got better and better in the glass. Sadly, everyone took large pours, so there was no going back for seconds. This is a wine that deserves First Growth status.

July 18, 2014 - Nice, dark, fruit and so on, but nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd of well done, quite sweet, high-end American redwines, loved by Parker. Lacks finesse and elegance and is fairly unstructured. To me, Mondavi reserve is the best buy among these type of wines, if considering value for money.
Opened 24 hours in advance followed by a 1-2 hour decant, which was necessary.

May 17, 2014 - on a night filled with 2005 cabs this was good but not the best (surprisingly since we all love Shafer Hillside Select!)
very tight. it was consumed later and not decanted so probably suffered in comparison to the earlier decanted 2005
still has decades of life left and hasn't really opened up yet.
