March 15, 2024 - René Engel: Consensus WOTN in terms of showing, while others could use many more years. Flamboyant and sexy with fully resolved spice, ready if inviting, a ripe all-in vintage at its very best. Someone remarked what I was thinking - who did better Engel or Dujac in this vintage? Actually a very very tough question. 95-96

March 15, 2024 - Rene Engel Dinner (Benoit Bistro, Manhattan): In close quality to the 2000. At a different point in its evolution and a wine of great concentration. Aromaticlly complex and hedonisticly giving. Like the 00, the tannin was resolved and the wine was elegant and giving. In contrast, however, one could tell that the concentration of the 90, the stuctural presence, was more robust. I think I have a slight preference for the more feminine 2000. Contender for wine of the night given.

December 29, 2022 - The first of a magical line up of 1990 red burgundies. Youthful, crimson red colour. Delightful nose of red fruits. Silky smooth palate, again of red fruits with a few black fruits as well. Great presence and energy. In full stride but with years left ahead of it too. Really excellent.

June 21, 2020 - The 1990 Rene Engel Clos Vougeot is nothing short of astonishing. A combination of aromatics and elegance in one glass. One of the best examples of Rene Engel. Tasted blind – Savoury bouquet of black cherry, earthy black truffle, and a graceful layer of dried meat. Ripe and aromatic stems, elegant and smooth on the mid-palate, perfect balance. 1991? Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques? (93/100)
