October 2, 2023 - Some bottle variation but in general consistent with my last note. B+

September 25, 2023 - Base neck. Cork soaked 1/2 way and broke in half on pull. Better with 30 minutes of air, this is past its best years but enjoyable. Drink now. B+

July 28, 2022 - Top shoulder/base neck. Cork saturated 1/2 way. This was unfortunately slightly corked but my take was past it’s peak but likely a pleasant, mature Tuscan if you get a properly stored bottle. No structure left so definitely drink now based on this bottle. B+?

December 3, 2018 - Very smooth and elegant. Just as much vintage taste as it takes. Fantastic balance. Loved it

    October 18, 2018 - 12,5% alcohol.

Deep and dark yet also noticeably translucent cherry red color. Developed, dark-toned nose with complex aromas of juicy blackcurrants and ripe dark fruits, some tertiary leathery tones, a little bit of sweet pruney character, light mushroomy tones of truffles and a woody hint of cedar. The wine is medium-bodied and developed yet still fresh and lively on the palate with nuanced flavors of wizened black cherries, leathery tones, some crunchy cranberry-driven red fruit, a little bit of sweet pruney dark fruit, slightly bitter notes of sour cherries, a hint of wizened blackcurrants and a cedary touch of savory oak. The wine is still enjoyably structured with its moderately high acidity and still quite firm and rather grippy tannins. The finish is moderately grippy, dark-toned and savory with very persistent flavors of tobacco, somewhat wizened black cherries, a little bit of peppery spice, light leathery tones and a hint of meaty umami.

A beautifully evolved, balanced and structured vintage of Tignanello that is starting to hit its apogee. Most likely the wine is going to continue to develop for some years but I'd wager it will keep good for many more years - perhaps even decades. Very classically built, this wine feels more like old-school Tuscan than modern or excessively polished Super-Tuscan. There are some blackcurrant-driven Cab flavors for sure, but the overall style is nicely dry, structure-driven and savory, and all the oak tones have wonderfully integrated with the fruit. Although 1993 was a very irregular vintage in Tuscany, this is an outstanding wine and feels like it is one of the greatest vintages of Tignanello.
