August 25, 2013 - Nice expression of fruit and leather with soft tannins providing structure. Well integrated and balanced.

December 6, 2008 - I bought three different bottles of Hungarian wine on a trip to Budapest in April this year. The first bottle we had, the Vincze Boraszat Egri Bikavér 2005, was very disappointing and I was slightly concerned about the potential quality of the other two. Therefore, I was relieved that this second bottle did much better:

The wine was very closed immediately after opening the bottle, not giving very much on the nose or on the palate. But it opened up nicely after one hour in the decanter. The nose showed lots of fruits, including plum, cherry and cassis, with spices and oak. The palate reflected the nose pretty well, with lots of fruits (again including plum, cherry and cassis) and well-integrated oak. The wine was medium-bodied, balanced and smooth, with fine-grained tannins, some acidity and a long finish. The wine had good structure and complexity.

I liked this well-made blend, which clearly showed its Cabernet fruit, with subtlety from the Pinot and the Merlot supporting the balance and structure. On the first evening, the wine was slightly more balanced and delicious than on the second evening. It is drinking well now (with some aeration) and I would guess that it should keep drinking well through 2011.
