Community Tasting Notes 4

July 10, 2013 - cork was a bit wet and broke off 3/4 of the way out. decanted the wine for about 2 hours. just bit, not very much, age showing on the edges. still a very dark good color with legs. some earthy on the nose. full bodied, leathery with a great full finish. glad that it was opened and consumed.

March 2, 2013 - This bottle was apparently very well kept prior to my purchase - mid-neck fill with a cork that was not at all soaked through. I did lose half of the cork in the bottle on my first attempt but thankfully was able to recover the rest prior to pouring. Notable for virtually no sediment in the bottle.

WOW, what a surprise! This wine from a mid-tier California producer is actually drinking very well as a mature Cabernet. Tertiary fruit and structure on the nose with some forest floor, mushroom, and stewed fruit/wet red clay notes. The tasting group had it pegged, interestingly enough, for an older Italian red or Chateauneuf. More of the same on the palate, with solid remaining weight, stewed fruit and, yes, an unexpected hint of garrigue. The finish is medium length with a tiny hint of sweetness on it (not oxidation, but a good sweetness).

Of course, as with any older bottle, you must have a well kept bottle - but if you do, I think this wine which is probably juuuuuuuust past peak will drink well for another 1-2 years.

December 26, 2012 - Well past it's prime. Fairly funky, no real fruit left, just bottle characteristics which were a bit too strong for my liking. Interesting but not tasty.

March 16, 2009 - A pleasant surprise here! This wine is really hanging in there. Healthy crimson color. Ripe strawberry, nutmeg, and just a hint of stewed tomato on the nose. Some light cherry fruit, nutmeg and cinnamon spice, a bit of earthiness. No tannins to speak of, beautiful finish. Better than some other, more prestigious wines I've had from 1984. Lovely.
