Community Tasting Notes 5

December 30, 2008 - Sadly, this bottle was a goner. not as bad as the last, but still past prime. When I bought three on sale early this year, i should have mowed through them, I've lost some wonderful wine. If you still have this wine, drink it NOW, DO NOT WAIT, it may already be too late!

October 2, 2008 - oofta... ruined. I have one left. 5mos ago this was great, 9months ago it was amazing. this one was DEAD. One left, and I'm hoping it's survived.

May 4, 2008 - not QUITE as good as I remembered it, but still a wonderful wine. I have two left, and still look forward to them with great anticipation. I still LOVE this wine. Still has a very pungent (yet in a good way) nose and a long easy finish.

January 22, 2008 - purchased from local shop that is usually on point. wine came highly recommended, and lived up to its billing. I've never spent $40 on a still white before, but it was well worth it. Wonderfully dry without the "death by oak" that I'm so used to with dry US whites. Rich gold color, muted nose, but the years have been very very kind to this wine. My nose isn't good enough to distinguish all the different aromas and flavors, but I know GOOD when I taste it... and this was GREAT. If you can find it, buy it and enjoy it soon, at nearly 10 years of age, I fear this wine will be past peak soon. The best white wine I have EVER encountered.

February 15, 2004 - Sunday, February 15, 2004 On the other hand, the 98 Guigal ’La Doriane’ Condrieu was the days first WOW and only got better as the day went on. Honeysuckle, white peach, anise, and apricot kernel and dried apricot. Full in the mouth and simply delicious from start to finish. Some detected a hint of bitterness on the finish but it was a fascinating wine to all. R&R at Ellis’ with the Col. on the notes.
Saturday, March 05, 2005 ’I’ve never had a Viognier like this before. Usually they’re thin and sweet.’ the guest said. ’I’ll bet,’ I thought, ’because past Viogniers you’ve probably tried are some bad Virginia example of the grape.’ This was a deep golden color. White flowers (reminded me of locust blossoms), honeysuckle, pear, mineral on the nose. Pear dominates the attack with honeysuckle mineral then white flowers in the midpalate. Anise followed by a kiss of toast on the finish from the oak. Perhaps not as bright and crisp as it should be, but a nice wine nevertheless. Excellent mouthfeel, as always with the heft you want from this wine, yet the delicacy you would expect. 13.5% alc. With assorted creamy cheeses and smoked salmon, asparagus and goat cheese roulade. With the Dortons.
