March 18, 2024 - Beaucastel Tasting Wunderbrunnen Opfikon

    general remarks:
the wines are in general more on the elegant side. red berric. high acidity. almost no wood (they only use 5000+ liters „foudres“) intermixed with some spices and flowery aromas. especially the older vintages gave me some "burgundy vibes". there was some bottle variation (some oxidative bottles), especially with some warmer and better rated vintages such as 1995 and 1999…
the younger the wines got the more similar they became and were hard to distinguish. also hard to tell where the younger vintages will end up in future. highlights were 1991 and 1996 (both 94 points).

in the cellar they use as low intervention as possible. every grape gets fermented on its own. they choose oxidative or reductive ageing for each grape separately according to the characteristics of the grape.
the chateau is owned and ran by the family perrin (7 ppl).

    Tasting note Beaucastel 1991:
    30% mouverdre, 30% syrah, 30% grenache.
light and ready, intense tertiary aromas of redish fruits, sous-bois, licorice. easy-going, very elegant and feminine on the nose which are supported by delicat flowery aromas.
on the palate veryvery smooth tannins, acidity is very high, again fresh and elegant and really light footed, this has roses and some other flowery aromas, grennish touch but not disturbing.
gave me burgundy vibes but even more elegant and more mineral.
a little short in length and not the most complex but over all good quality and it was really my style. good drinkflow.
started at 92 and climbed its way to 94.

July 8, 2022 - Mostly tertiary aromas at this point — earth, mushrooms, chocolate, blackberry stems/seeds, black currant and a hint of alcohol (which diminished over time).

Fruit flavors are still present but in decline — mostly black fruit, cherry and suis bois flavors. Some barnyard character throughout. Still decent acidity, but almost no tannins left.

Quite good though if you like the complex tertiary stuff. Really benefits from a long decant, best after 3 hours. Cork in excellent condition. Lots of sediment.

November 26, 2020 - Pretty wine that is still enjoyable for its age.

August 7, 2016 - Light red. Burgundian colour. Elegant nose of light red fruit, merde and very light earthiness. Delicious light cherry and earth flavours and a balanced light finish.

Though it seemed like it could be an old Burgundy, there is just a bit of sweetness in the nose that would lead you away from there.

A very good Beaucastel that shows the animal traits of Mouvedre but in an elegant way.

March 31, 2015 - fruit was a bit faded, but this bottle was everything promised by the house. aromas of leather. flavors of ripe red plum, this reminded me most of an older merlot. tannin was fully integrated, and the wine had healthy acidity. some baking spice on the finish. excellent, if not spectacular, and was definitely from a well-preserved bottle.
