March 16, 2024 - Corked. Brought by a friend. Both 1986's (Pape Clement and Latour) at the dinner have been defective

June 20, 2023 - **What did I miss once again and where did this wine go? A first growth 86? Last bottle and obviously a miss on all levels. Very weak for a Latour, but still very Bordeaux. More cedar laden with expected earthiness, but clipped and short. The best thing this wine has going for it was that it was rather light footed. Drink or Sell for the value.

April 29, 2023 - 3 hr decant. Is it a great Latour? No. Is it a great wine? Yes. Tons of blackberries and dark stone fruit, all intense but remarkably fresh. Graphite, some tobacco leaf, very little in the way of florals. Very smooth, almost defying the vintage. In no danger of cracking up - it seems you could keep this for decades more and it would be virtually unchanged. But this is assuredly *not* a block of wood like so many 1986s turned into. If I had to extrapolate, allow me to compare this to 2 1986s I know well: 1986 Lafleur - which seems like Sleeping Beauty to be condemned to silence for a century — and 1986 Gruaud Larose, which finally has come out of its cocoon. This is somewhere in the middle: more longevity than a Gruaud Larose, less despairingly eternal (as in eternally unforgiving) than 1986 Lafleur.
Score: 95. Relative to expectations: ++1 person found this helpful Comment -

10/25/2003 (link) 95 points(Château Latour Grand Vin) Chateau Latour Vertical with Robert Parker and Latour's Frederic Engerer: Nose hinted of Madeira, along with strawberries and cream; elegant, strawberry, coffee flavors; a little Burgundian on the finish. Drinking well now. (Parker said it was like the '96, although taking a long time to develop.)
