January 2, 2024 - Opened a month ago and it had turned close to orange and was gone. I will call it defective but I waited way too long. I'll open the 2010 soon

    August 7, 2021 - Bottled under a screwcap. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Luminous, medium-deep burnished golden yellow color. Clean, slightly evolved yet still relatively youthful nose with vibrant aromas of ripe citrus fruits and sweeter lemon marmalade tones, stony mineral notes, some toasty wood notes, a little bit of sweet Golden Delicious apple, light nectarine tones, hints of creamy richness and melting butter and a touch of something waxy. The wine is lively, fresh and acid-driven on the palate with a medium body and intense flavors of fresh golden apples and lemony citrus fruits, some evolved creamy tones, a little bit of crunchy star fruit, light mineral notes of chalk dust and tangy salinity, a nutty hint of savory oak and a touch of quinine bitterness. Bright, structured and very high acidity. The saline tang seems to only increase towards the aftertaste. The finish is lively, crunchy and quite acid-driven with mouth-cleansing flavors of tangy salinity, lemony citrus fruits, some sharp notes of Granny Smith apple and key lime, light creamy tones, a little bit of evolved nuttiness, a hint of star fruit and a touch of chalky mineral bitterness.

The last time I tasted this wine (October 2020) I thought it was a younger Chardonnay from Western Australia, but I managed to commit that wine to my memory, so this time I could actually add up one plus one. The wine does scream of Chablis, but many other people guessed Chardonnay from other places than Chablis - many went for a younger Côte Chalonnaise or Beaune white and I was the only one suggesting an older 1er Cru or Grand Cru Chablis that has seen some oak. And that's exactly what the wine was. Although starting to show some signs of age, the wine is still remarkably youthful for its age - and perhaps a bit too youthful if one is looking for an aged Chablis. Based on how youthful this still is, I can see the wine continuing to evolve easily for at least another decade or so and keeping good for much longer. Great stuff.

    October 24, 2020 - Bottled under a screwcap. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Concentrated neon yellow-green color that does not betray the age of the wine one bit. Toasty, slightly evolved and slightly grassy nose with aromas of green apples, woody plank, some apricot tones, a little bit of buttery richness, light vanilla tones, an evolved hint of caramel and a touch of zesty citrus fruit. The wine is very focused, crunchy and quite acid-driven on the palate with a medium body and intense flavors of lemony citrus fruits and nuances of key lime, some creamy richness, a little bit of steely minerality, light notes of quinine bitterness, hints of savory wood spice and toast and a touch of tangy salinity. Wonderfully structured high acidity. The finish is long, crisp and crunchy with precise flavors of tart lemony citrus fruits, some tangy salinity, a little bit of toasty oak, light sharp notes of Granny Smith apple, hints of creaminess and browned butter and a touch of savory wood spice.

I guesses quite immediately that this was a cool-climate Chardonnay, but based on the combination of freshness and understated yet somewhat obvious oak tones, my guess was a well-made 6-7 yo new world Chardonnay, probably from Margaret River or Mornington Peninsula. I was floored to learn that this was a Chablis Grand Cru - moreso as this was from a producer I knew and a vintage I had already tasted in the past! The wine was abnormally youthful and even rather backward for a Chablis clocking at 13 years, but most likely the screwcap was here to blame. I'm not complaining how wonderfully the wine performed here, but I was just wondering whether the screwcap really gives what people want, if they have been keeping this wine in their cellar for a decade and the wine has evolved barely at all during that time? Nevertheless, back in 2014 I wrote how this wine shows tremendous aging potential, but looking back at my TN, it feels like the wine I tasted then (which was closed with a cork stopper) was more evolved 6 years ago than this one (closed with a screwcap) was now, in 2020. This was a fine and enjoyable Chardonnay in every aspect, but I think the wine I tasted in 2014 showed more depth and aged complexity than this one!

(BROCARD Chablis LES CLOS) Les Clos #2 Dear Friends, The Chablis Les Clos offer last week spurred a myriad of 2007 Les Clos requests but most of the material made from the vineyard in 2007 has already sold through or been allocated - there's just not a lot of wine to begin with. I've been trying to gain access to a parcel of this wine for a few months and I finally have one directly from the source. Please keep in mind the rarity of the vineyard but, with that in mind, Brocard's Les Clos may be the single finest value in top-tier Grand Cru white Burgundy in the 2007 vintage - enough said. If you are into the finest tactile and nervous examples that cut through the chaff with a stalactite of extract, verve and the mysterious yin-yang of masculine/feminine, this is your wine: This wine has become one of the most difficult to find in 2007 Chablis - we cannot get a second parcel. If we run out, you may want to check with Premier Cru to see if they have any left at $55. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for outstanding typicity and value for the highest end: 2007 Brocard Chablis "Les Clos" Grand Cru (BH93-96) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Burg8920
