January 2, 2017 - Dark, black fruit, powerful nose, real Syrah...little depth and length though...

December 17, 2016 - 6th Annual Christmas dinner and cellar raid (Naperville, IL): Part of Christmas Dinner and Cellar Raid, didn't take detailed notes. Not much you can say that hasn't already been said about this. Power and elegance in one package

December 10, 2016 - Ruby garnet color, dense opaque and good clarity. The smells are blackberry, blueberry, cherry jolly rancher, cedar, and green olive. Tastes are seductive with mild notes of sweet Asian spice, blueberries, blackberry, teah, vanilla, with soft tannins and plush texture. The finish is lengthy and very pleasurable.

October 29, 2016 - The 2006 Raven Syrah from Sine Qua Non is a blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache and 2% Viognier that spent just under two years on French oak. Being a product from one of those truly mythical producers in the world, it certainly goes from clarity to clarity when tasting. All Sine Qua Non wines are built like a solid rock and extremely powerful. What makes them stand out in this group is they are always carefully balanced and integrated. The best description is liquid velvet. If looking for one word to describe this wine it would actually be elegant and if adding a second word powerful elegance. The 2006 Raven Syrah exhibits the classical nose of dark perfectly ripe Syrah fruit, abundant sweet licorice, subtle dried flowers and a whiff of blueberries. Integration and multiple layers of complexity that emerge with some time in the glass are other hallmarks. There is spice, saddle leather and soft gentle dried tobacco leaves - after about three hours in the glass... The palate is perfectly integrated with a lovely texture and structure. Tannins are soft and silky and add to the experience in a lovely way together with an exquisitely balanced acidity. There is a more than a minute length on the finish and the wine lingers on even longer than that... This effort certainly has shown some clarity tonight. Always a memorable experience to taste SQN - this being the 31st time since 2010.

August 12, 2016 - It's wines like this that make me raise my eyebrows when professional or amateur American wine tasters make the throwaway lines about "Aussie fruit bombs" or "Aussie oak monsters". This SQN, along with the Colgin IX Estate Syrah 2007, are both so much more fruit bomb/extracted/alcoholic than most table wines that are typically drunk in Australia.

15.5% ABV. Malt aromatics dominant, blue petals and plum. Kirsch cherry, dark plums, licorice flavours - super-extracted, alcohol heat very apparent in the midpalate; full ripe tannins, full-bodied. Almost like drinking a dry port. Lacks definition.

A wine firmly in the style of "more of everything". All curves and skin on display. High alcohol, full bodied, enormously extracted...and yet for all this the wine lacks tension, energy and definition. Hard to drink this with food as it does not complement but instead overpowers, and hard to drink more than a glass of this.
