March 18, 2024 - Beaucastel Tasting Wunderbrunnen Opfikon

    general remarks:
the wines are in general more on the elegant side. red berric. high acidity. almost no wood (they only use 5000+ liters „foudres“) intermixed with some spices and flowery aromas. especially the older vintages gave me some "burgundy vibes". there was some bottle variation (some oxidative bottles), especially with some warmer and better rated vintages such as 1995 and 1999…
the younger the wines got the more similar they became and were hard to distinguish. also hard to tell where the younger vintages will end up in future. highlights were 1991 and 1996 (both 94 points).

in the cellar they use as low intervention as possible. every grape gets fermented on its own. they choose oxidative or reductive ageing for each grape separately according to the characteristics of the grape.
the chateau is owned and ran by the family perrin (7 ppl).

    Tasting note Beaucastel 1999:
on the nose wet saw dust, maggi, sweat and oxidative.

maybe flawed. second bottle after 1995 that was overwhelmingly oxidative...

March 3, 2024 - Having only ever had Château de Beaucastel young, I was excited to corkage this bottle at Balthazar in New York on Sunday evening. Drunk over two and a half hours, the wine evolved extremely well in the glass, proving to be an excellent example of mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The nose had a lot of the great qualities that I've come to enjoy from the Rhône valley, boasting scents of blackberries, tobacco, cedar and a light note of olive tapenade I usually associate with the Northern part of the region. The palate had a lot of fruit intact as the upfront possessed a medley of tart redcurrants, plum and dark cherries before the wine began to show its maturity in the mid-palate through notes of spices, chocolate and light licorice. The tannins were still very much present, creating a silkiness that was aided by the arrival of an herbaceous note on the finish. This wine felt like it was in a really good spot, balancing out the rusticity that comes out of maturity with the finesse of much of the fruit still being intact. Thoroughly enjoyable.

February 29, 2024 - Compared to the 2000 Marcoux, this is surprisingly polished and sleek. A fresh, elegant style of Beaucastel with a red-fruited palate with a mineral finish. Possibly too young, this is a nice wine but not one that moves me much. At home with Per.

February 21, 2024 - strawberry, cranberry, oak, licorice, forest floor. Lasts so long with a great strawberry tangy aftertaste for like a minute plus. Gorgeous ruby color. Unfiltered. Velvety tannins. Nice and tart. Evolves in the glass. Decanted and drank slowly. Got tons more wet leaves as it sat. Might just be gaslighting myself but eventually either tea or herbs. This wine changed so much I can’t tell.

That being said, drink soon as I’m not sure how long it’ll continue to show this way. Tannins and acids are depleting.
