Community Tasting Notes 5

August 6, 2020 - PNP into 薄はり葡萄酒器 (“Flower” day): Medium orange copper to the eyes with very fine deposits, great colours.

On nose there is a lot of ripe and luxurious preserved stone fruits like apricots, some yellow fruits and some mandarin peels. There is also a sense of salinity that one can smell here that sets it apart, no detectable VA here. More forward and inviting compared to my distant memory of its counterpart.

Highly mineral, very well judged, mouth watering acidity welcomes the taster, very refined from the attack, mid palate to finish. Some fresh-grounded spices towards the finish but the most impressive element here would be its mid palate intensity incorporating all its aromas on nose, followed by a stylish clean finish. This was done without any compromises on its structure too.

This reminds me of the initial impression of the 1969 Krug vintage tasted with its luxurious fruits, but also the soft touch elegance of a top flight ouille style (a little more towards a Vin Jaune?) Jura Savagnin, though this particular bottle is more about its exuberant mid palate concentration rather than its finish.

Hard to not give this at least 94 points, will certainly pair with any food but there is probably also no need. Reserved for longer term observations.

1 hour upon opening, 1/4 into the bottle: With some time in glass a little mushroom like notes emerged, and forgot to mention per above that tannins are basically non-existent here...

March 10, 2012 - An extraordinary orange-bronze colour, like an amber ale. A bit muted at first, but opened up with successive waves of aromas: marzipan, almonds, a touch of balsamic vinegar, then strawberries and peaches. Notwithstanding the hints of balsamic, this was clean and fresh and had a smoth satiny mouthfeel.

February 5, 2010 - with a grilled tuna or in olive oil this is the wine to drink. This wine will be excellent with veal and pork,
it must be open 1 hour earlier and should served at 15/16 degrees, not too cold,
it is pretty complicated to describe this very particular wine.
it is not filtered so the colour is dark pink the smell is intense and the taste is long in the mouth mixing a number of fruits from apricots to peaches

November 7, 2008 - At See Saw in Scottsdale, AZ. $60 (a fair price, unlike some others on their crazy long list)
This was very settled down, past prime, but still a great match for the food at See Saw (a non-traditional Japanese restaurant with a 28 Zagat rating). I learned you should hold this wine for 8-10 years; I already knew it's too wild upon release.

January 11, 2008 - Extraordinary wine. Deep, amontillado-sherry-like colour, pronounced oxidisation, yet still fresh-tasting and somehow wonderful. Unique.

Rockss and Fruit

(Radikon Oslavje Riserva) Radikon is a brilliant winemaker with a style all his own. He used to make very clean modern artisinal wines that the Italian wine world loved and he had an international following. But soon a shift in style occured as Radikon was seeking a style that would express the vineyard more and he believed that all modern intervention leaves the wine farther and farther from the source character of the vineyard. So to make a long story short he went au natural and this wine is unlike most white wine out there. Really redefines it and what to expect from a white wine. The color of this wine is yellow with amber and orange. That is from the excessive skin contact. There is also unbeliavable richness and texture with fruit freshness that is just uncanny. There's VA, cloudiness, incredible texture and freshness. Just constant contradictions. The finish is long but tannic. One of the most original wines I have ever tasted.
