2006 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 Kalimna
- > South Australia
Community Tasting Notes 65
August 13, 2014 - Opened up after an hour or two and is drinking beautifully. Has the legs to continue developing well over the next 5-8 years.

May 30, 2014 - Jordyn & Jason's night (Darley Cabin): Decanted 3 hours. Masculine, meaty wine with intense blackberry, black plum, smoke, and black licorice. Some of the oak has integrated since 2012; time is starting to iron this out into a big, balanced Shiraz. This is a big wine, but not overripe. For that reason, I'd say this will end up more like the 1996 than the 1998 (both drank a couple weeks ago), becoming increasingly elegant over the next 10 years. This 2006 was much better than the 2009 that was tasted alongside.2 people found this helpful Comment

May 12, 2014 - Fina mognadstoner, lite vitpeppar, björbär, multna löv. Helt integrerat vin som aldrig varit bättre än nu! Moderata tanniner och syra.

April 17, 2014 - Let it stand - lot of sediment in this bottle. Aged beautifully, consistent but more intense than what i remember 2 years ago. One bottle left.

April 7, 2014 - Intense aromas of blackberries, raspberries, cocoa with hints of graphite pencil shavings, vanilla, caramel and dried herbs.
Richly flavoured, deep and intense raspberries, cherries and blackberries with dark chocolate and beautifully integrated oak flavours of vanilla and caramel.
Full bodied, full flavoured, still relatively high acidity and rounded mouth feel finishing dry with firm, but smooth, tannins.
Took several hours of decanting to bring it to this amazing level, the flavours changing with every glass.
Amazing drinking now but enough balls to last well into the next decade.1 person found this helpful Comments (2)

Thank you to all who made 2009 another memorable and groundbreaking year at Garagiste - it is your support and interest that continues to churn our cogwheels of discovery. Without your passion and dedication, the circuitous travel down our long and winding wine road would be for naught. The privilege of holding your wine education and enjoyment in our hands is a responsibility we take very seriously and, for that, we give you our sincerest thank you.

Deal of the Year
As the new year beckons, our deal of 2009 is upon us.
Taking everything into account - ageability, price/value and potential to excite (from a collector point of view), this bargain is unmatched.
If you are looking for old-school Shiraz to lay-away for a decade or more, this wine represents the finest deal of the year. Certainly there were 2007 Cotes du Rhones or other fantastic bargains this year but they will not be around 20-25 years from now and this wine will.
Not a wine for today (it is far too disjointed with nearly every element is in another corner of the room), the Kalimna Bin remains an homage to the 1960's and 1970's halcyon days of Penfolds - an era that produced a number of the finest vinous treasures ever produced. To understand the 2006 Kalimna Bin 28, one must forgive the ridiculously low price and treat it as a bottle of Hermitage to be placed in safe keeping for an important occasion a decade or two from now.
Northern Rhone, Wendouree and 1960's Grange enthusiasts pay special attention here:
VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a throw-back that tosses caution to the wind (despite the great risk of alienating the bargain audience Penfolds has tried to cultivate for decades). The structure, low-level glycerol sweetness and rough and tumble presence of this wine are not for neophytes...but they are for serious collectors.
