November 25, 2014 - Inky dark, no signs of age, big nose of dark chocolate herbal tarry goodness. Some cherry cola in a good way. Silky and taut on the palate, nice bitter chocolate and very seamless. Great food wine (truffle dinner at Delfina SF!)

October 27, 2014 - Chicago Rotating Dinner Series - 2001 Piedmont (Osteria Langhe - Chicago, IL): One of the more expressive wines of the night. Lots of rose notes, and a combination of dark fruits with cranberries, cherries, and pomegranate. Still had some drying tannins on the finish, but I really liked this.

October 27, 2014 - Rotating Dinner Series- A tour of 2001 Barolo (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: There is a real intensity to the nose with licorice, dark red fruits, tobacco, leather, spice tones, and a touch of oak. There is excellent depth here with a more powerful style too.

Taste: Full bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is certainly there, but it isn't too potent. There is a robust and powerful side to it beneath the structure with dark red fruits, dark red cherries, licorice, tobacco, earth, and a hint of oak on the back end.

Overall: This felt like it was somewhat open. It still needs some more time to fully come together, but it is showing relatively well at this time.

October 12, 2014 - Decanted for two hours. Although far less open that the 1998 Ciabot Mentin Ginestra that preceded it, this was in my opinion the superior wine. Darker garnet color. Massive nose of granite, camphor, tar, violets, sea air, blackberry, and leather. Powerful yet incredibly detailed on the palate with an evolution of flavors occurring in waves during each sip: leather, dark plum, blackberry, anise, orange peel, stone, briar, and asphalt to name a few. Bracing acidity, serious tannins buried under primary fruit, and a long finish brimming with stone structure and hovering, brooding black fruit. A majestic wine caught quite early, with many years of positive development to go.

September 1, 2014 - excellent. unfort had after many other bottles, so palate was bit shot. powerful, beautiful and legs to age longer. held its own with a spicy tomato pasta and rib eye steak.

(Clerico Barolo Ginestra) It was truffle season, so we complemented a great pasta and truffle course with a 2001 Clerico Barolo Ginestra. Ironically, I had just had this wine four days prior in New York. It both started my week in New York and my weekend in Europe. It was classic Piedmont with its nose of leather, tar and pine nuts. Gil observed, ‘tomato salsa.’ There was lots of intense structure and great black fruits along with a hint of black jam, anise and mint chocolate. Kelly found ‘a lot of oak.’ The palate was thick on its finish, and a lot of oak did linger on its backside. It hinted at flavors of leather, tar and anise. The finish was smackingly good in that Barolo way
