February 4, 2014 - Time has really served this wine well. Quite black fruity with new wood notes- plenty rich across the palate - large scale, very grapey -all with no rough edges - heat, tannin, etc. In the scheme of things, a really solid California Syrah. Very much in form And if well stored, will keep with an upside. Still ends with a tannic/added acid on the tip of the tongue note.
After four hours of air, this wine is better than my initial score of 87 - so I moved it up. As I recall, it was about $13 a bottle when I bought it, and is that a factor?, you bet it is. -

December 2008 (link)(Hahn SLH Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands) 88% Syrah, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; 66% Hook Ranch, 34% Doctor’s Vineyard. Inky-violet color, reminiscent of an Aussie Shiraz. Fairly complex aromas of blackberry, black cherry, meat, woodsmoke, coffee, and tobacco leaf. Smooth tannins ride on a medium-bodied palate, with moderate length. Terroir: Doctor's Vineyard
