December 31, 2016 - New Year's Eve. From magnum, this was a beast still in youth but nonetheless enjoyable. Double decanted 6 hours ahead. Once popped, this alluring rich scent of ripe fruit, tar, chocolate waffed into the room. Then in to the decanter it was a tight and HUGELY OAKED wine. It took about 4 hours for the oak to subside, multiple pourings between decanters. In the evening, it was a muscular meaty wine with powerful red fruits, leather, rich spices, game and underbrush. Fine structure and no trace of heat but some tightness lingered. It would be better in 2-3 years but was very enjoyable nonetheless right now.

October 7, 2016 - Good, but not as expressive and deep as the bottle last year. Great plush ripe fruit. Maybe a little monolithic. Spice and components were more subdued in this bottle on the palate and aromatics. Moderate length. Threw quite a bit of bitter fine sediment, so air and decanting do help. Needed 2-3hrs to show well.

August 3, 2016 - Very nice Chateauneuf drinking well now. More finesse and freshness than profoundness, but rather balanced with soft tanins and a decent length. I quite liked it.

May 22, 2016 - Drank at UC on 12.23.14. Decanted it for 40 minutes and it drank like a burgundy! Very soft and drinking well. So drinking now! Don’t store. Drank 2/14/16 with Mary… drank very nice. Not complex but soft round Rhone taste. 5/8/2016 with Mary. Opened and tasted. Delicious! not rich or deep but smooth and silk.

(Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes) This cuvée is 70% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, with 10% Syrah, the vines aged 80-100 years. Ripe, with smoky cherry fruit. A good supple quality, perhaps a touch more savoury than the other wines here. A good grip and structure to it, lots of tannins, and a less confit style of fruit here too. Still a very big wine though, with a very full-on character. Good.
