May 22, 2016 - Drank at UC on 12.23.14. Decanted it for 40 minutes and it drank like a burgundy! Very soft and drinking well. So drinking now! Don’t store. Drank 2/14/16 with Mary… drank very nice. Not complex but soft round Rhone taste. 5/8/2016 with Mary. Opened and tasted. Delicious! not rich or deep but smooth and silk.

December 9, 2015 - Nice ripe fruit. The high alcohol (15%) doesn't dominate. With just a little bit of air time, opened up beautifully. Would have score a bit higher if the finish was a little longer. Not too bad for a sub par year of CDP. Had with braised short ribs.

November 14, 2015 - Popped and aerated for 4+ hours, deep ruby/purple hue, youthful. Pretty aromas of raspberry, black currant, fresh herbs (mint, oregano & tarragon), florals, iron, decaying foliage and spice from oak. Medium-plus body, nice balance. Despite a bit of modern polish this is almost classically CdP in flavor, with expressive notes of kirsch, sour cherry, Herbes de Provence, menthol, umami (soy sauce??), black pepper, a subtle hint of minerals and a touch of smoke from the oak. While perhaps somewhat chalky, the tannins are nicely integrated on a close which continues on and on with surprising length.
For an "off" vintage, this is outstanding and far closer in style to classic Châteauneuf than many a monstrosity we've seen emerge from the more recent, riper vintages that are extolled by critics; just great stuff here!

(Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes) This cuvée is 70% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, with 10% Syrah, the vines aged 80-100 years. Ripe, with smoky cherry fruit. A good supple quality, perhaps a touch more savoury than the other wines here. A good grip and structure to it, lots of tannins, and a less confit style of fruit here too. Still a very big wine though, with a very full-on character. Good.
