May 20, 2017 - Medium tawny-brown in color. The nose is clean, with slight oxidation. Aromas of orange zest, dried apricot, hazelnuts, toasted almonds, honey, caramel. The palate is off-dry, consistent with the nose, with medium (+) acidity and high alcohol. Medium (+) body, with a long, slightly saline finish. Very interesting, with years, if not decades, of further ageability.

April 27, 2017 - Madeira Seminar and Guided Tasting (Cream Wine Company - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Some dried stone fruit and toasted almonds. Bigger textures vs Charleston giving this great mouth feel. Good+ concentration.

March 24, 2017 - Evaluating after it has been open for a few weeks; seems to have picked up extra depth and complexity. Cohesive combination of coffee/tobacco/roasted nuts/raisin/date/honey/dark bread crust and brighter citrus sorts of aromas, with nice depth. Similar flavors, with good balance between moderate sweetness and marked acidity. Long finish, with explicit coffee particularly persistent. Good stuff, excellent value.

November 27, 2016 - This bottle has the guaranty seal of the Instituto do Venho do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madaira. Per the bottle, in the 18th and 19th centuries, Madeira was the United States' most prestigious wine, shipped to connoisseurs in major seaports from New Orleans to Boston. Savannah was one of the great "Madeira cities," and the wines that entered its port depended heavily on Verdelho for their character. They were dry to semi-dry, with round, nutty flavours and fresh acidity. Savannah Verdelho celebrates this style and pairs well with soups and cheeses. Vinhos Barbeito is located in Cámara de Lobos, on the island of Madeira. 19.5%. $50. Depicted on the front label is the Branch Bank of the United States, 1822, located in Savannah and built in the Greek revival style by William Jay, who worked in Savannah from 1817 to 1823 before returning to his native England.

June 22, 2016 - Unusually high acidity. Very lively. Pretty raspberry liqueur. Raisins. Singed citrus peel; really smoky. Peanuts and caramel. The finish is exceptionally long and bright. I felt this wine came together and improved substantially with a few days of air.

It's interesting to smell the empty glass of a wine like this. I smell raisins and tobacco.
