Community Tasting Notes 2

July 27, 2008 - Medium red. Semi-soil with some ass. Light sour cherries with mandarin oranges on the finish. Quite straightforward at the start but the second round of tasting showed a much rounder wine without the sharp edges. In fact the nose had sort of soupy characteristics with rounder haw berries with a “kum kum” preserved orange peel finish. Not a thinker wine but given the second chance, can prove rewarding.

July 25, 2008 - Rather ho-hum Bourgogne in a very modern style. Drank at home with Jerming, Alex and Fiona. Lots of funk and wet earth on the nose at first, with a wild, brambly, herbacious undertow and a whiff of flowery musk. The funk blew away with time, but the bramble remained a constant, even showing a tad green at times. A chalky, clayey scent peeked out here and there. Suitably old world, but the palate was anything but. Sweet, thickish with a little bit of spritz and a whole lot of sour cherries, tailing of to slightly bitter mandarin orange peel. All rather one-dimensional here, with a slight gap in the mid-palate and rather tart acidity. Thankfully, the wine opened up and rounded off significantly with some time. It took on a slightly savoury, gamey, chicken fat flavour and sweeter cherry fruit. The acid also softened a bit on the edges. A slight rusty, ferrous end started emerging at the finish. Not a bad bottle, but I would have expected more from a 2002 Burg - this was actually served blind and I guessed either Burg from a poorer vintage or a Marlborough pinot.
