March 18, 2023 - Perfumed with mature red cherry, good length and the elegance we adore from Volnay. Good for another 5* years.
July 11, 2022 - Open and expressive on the nose, really pretty with earthy notes, red fruit, dark flowers, spices; quite layered and complex. On the palate a little drying towards the finish. Good fruit overall, nice acidity, spicy, a little stemmy. Intense finish, good length. Drink up. 91-93
March 20, 2021 - Autumn flavors, matured red cherry with subtle spice. Overall classically Volnay, drinking well now and holding up very well.
March 26, 2020 - Opened 30 minutes before tasting. Mature red cherry aromas and flavors with spice, earth and hints of autumn flowers. Good weight and length. Holding very well with even better balance. Last taste, 3+ hours after opening, was certainly the best.
April 25, 2019 - Good, but showing a little VA. Not at the level of other recent bottles.
January 26, 2019 - Louis Jadot Tasting with Frédéric Barnier (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Popped and poured, then served to today's tasting group. Almost fully mature red cherry with plenty of earth, along with spice hints and late summer flowers. Good weight and length, good+ balance. Another small pour an hour after it was opened seemed to show even greater depth.
February 7, 2017 - Really good ripe sweet red red cherry aromas. Dark dry dense flavors with chewy spices. Nice depth with a balance and structure. Solid.
February 5, 2017 - My favorite of the 2002 Volany flight. Gorgeous, sexy aromatic of cherry liqueur and florals. Palate is smooth with good concentration. Loads of spice and florals on the long finish.
February 5, 2017 - Good Wine with an Exciting Super Bowl (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Nicely mature red cherry and berry with earth and overall excellent balance, with good length and weight. Good textures. This evolved and got more interesting over the course of the evening.
February 5, 2017 - Color: Ruby core with a brick-tinged rim leading to clear meniscus.
Smell: Roses, dried red fruits and earth.
Taste: Dried red fruit, tomato leaf, and mushrooms.
Overall: This is in a place where it feels like another 5 years in the cellar. While lovely now, it feels like it's ebbing between secondary and tertiary flavors...and has the stuffing to make 20 years with another 5+ years.
