2004 Bodegas del Marqués de Vargas Rioja ReservaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
2/16/2024 - gnosis wrote: NRVery good, but not a stellar wine. However, the very excellent 04 vintage shows through. This seems only a few years old, with vibrant acidity and fruit. Wow. Not stellar, but hard to believe it is that old! And yet it is better than really young. A winner, but kind of a unique on. |

10/22/2023 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRFriendly right away, nice aromas, resolved tannins, fruit. I see wine on an arc, ascending and descending slowly. This is on descent and is pleasant. I wish I had drank some of my bottles the past few years, but still enjoyable now. Going to drink up soon though. |

9/10/2023 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRStill good, mostly fruit driven, like aged cherry fruit, some cola notes, a little menthol early but maybe not after open. Basically good fruit base, more cherry, less cocoa and coffee of Left Bank. A little tannin taste, but resolved. Drinking well and easy. At times it reminds me of an aged bigger Burgundy with the fruit profile. Good. 13% not hot either. Not stellar but a solid enjoyable bottle. After open hours, half bottle, it still seems young. Again not stellar, but good and younger notes. |

6/4/2023 - gnosis wrote: NRFirstly, I didn't necessarily mean to open this. Originally, I bought it thinking I might open it one day. Last week I put up some expensive wines to auction. This was one of them. However, as I stood the bottle up, the cork dropped down. Ugh. Guess I'll have to open it now. |

5/31/2023 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRMmm, delicious! Straight up strawberry jam, hint of cola, and a little bit of limestone. Just enough acid and light resolved tannins. Pure pleasure on its own, and sure it would hold up to lighter foods too. Glad to have more. |

11/23/2021 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRMy experience was pretty much ditto of what Chekib M wrote on 10/8. Not for everyone at this stage, but depth and length that were really enjoyable. Surprising acidity still, which gave it good structure. Coincidentally, I also had it with sea scallops and steamed cauliflower (not planned), and it was a great match. It definitely benefited from at least an hour of breathing or decanting. |

10/23/2021 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRIt just occurred to me that this reminded me of Selosse, an oxidized style perhaps. Another feather in the cap. I will buy more of this! |

10/23/2021 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRI would agree with recent tasters and add after a few years the following: the bubbles are larger at first and settle into finer bubbles later. There is an oxidized note of age, which I like, and a deeper gold color to the wine. This is the first Cava, GR or other, that if you served me, I would have guessed was Champagne. Tell me this is BdB and I'd believe it. There are two advantages for me: price, it is lower than Champagne; and two, it is Not Champagne. Want to show someone what Cava can do?? The grapes are all indigenous Spanish Cava ones, Macabeo, Xarel.lo, and Perellada. An Ace for Spain! |

2006 Marqués de Riscal Rioja ReservaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
8/24/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRThis was a pleasant surprise. It is showing very well, all things considered. Serious. structure, definite age and burnished profile, but delicious, long, and bouquet! If you open it, drink it, it will not save. And it mutates. At first is this Bordeaux or Burgundy? (as aged Rioja does). But it settles on aged Bordeaux. Cedar, spice, supple leather, what is that dark dried fruit? Hmm. Definite age and oxidized notes; but if you love what that brings a wine, this one is as one taster said, singing. I quite agree. I don't give points, but at its highs, I'd say it has to be over 90. I will definitely restock my cellar with this and aim to sit on them. Very enthusiastically thumbs up! |

2003 Castello di Verduno Barolo Vigna MassaraNebbiolo more |
7/29/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRGood but a little disappointing, a bit muted, older, just not hitting on the cylinders it should be. Resolved tannins, cola eye, still pleasant, but has lost verve that would make it more enjoyable. Could be bottle variation at this point. The '03 Barbaresco was much better. Will see with next bottle which I will open soon. Well made juice though, would buy again. |

7/28/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRThis bottle is singing to me tonight. I had an '03 Barolo from this producer which just seemed muted. This one still has fruit and flowers, and resolved tannins and balanced acidity. Shows bricking a bit, but such a nice subtle mouthfeel and clean finish. Very happily surprised, and hard not to finish it all! One more bottle, so shall see. I would not wait. Maybe some variation in bottles at this age. Will check on another Barolo too and see where it is. This is delightful. |

7/28/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRWell, my last bottle, and patience was rewarded. This is one of the best aliagnicos that I've had, or that I remember. I'll certainly seek it out again. This wine at this stage shows bricking and that damp earth minerality on the nose, medium eye almost. Tannins resolved and almost sweet with enough grip to keep things together. Almost reminds me of aged Barbaresco or an aging Pinot in a way. Must not have a lot of intrusive wood. Very pleasant, a lot of sediment, a pleasure down to the last grainy drop. |

2006 Cantine DEI Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Bossona RiservaSangiovese more |
7/28/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRI probably should have gotten to this earlier. A taster said in 2018 he felt it was at its peak. I think it is slightly over, but is enjoyable, especially with food. It is dark, full, resolved tannins, less fruit but has body, and woody notes. Reminds me of a dark Bordeaux right now. I probably like this better younger with prettier notes to it, but still was good. I might even like the regular VN better too, or as much. Will get more in the future, I'm sure. |

7/28/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRDidn't keep notes, and drank over 2 days. Thought it was probably better before, stewed fruit, resolved tannins, a little oxidation. Similar to last taster. Would drink sooner next time. |

6/26/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRDrinking quite well. Still has fruit to it, resolved dusty tannins, and lighter on the leather and aged, meaty notes of Bdx. Still def is Bdx. I expected a darker wine, but I find the body and balance quite nice. Not as fruity as some might suggest. Deep ruby and can be enjoyed by the glass, although I had it with dinner. Half for tomorrow. Pretty much poured a glass and sipped for a while before dinner. Didn't seem to need a ton of decanting. Good QPR, I'd buy again. |

2006 Dominio de Atauta Ribera del DueroTinto Fino, Tempranillo more |
6/22/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRSo many people all saying it is in a great spot - it is! Perhaps has traded an element of new for old, but it is supple, dry, friendly, full on the palate, and dusty on the finish. Fully enjoyable with fruit, structure, and elegance. Leans more Rioja than Ribera in a way, or a mid-way point. A very interesting and liked one it is. |

6/17/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRIn 2017 I said I'd drink my other bottle (this one) soon, only I didn't until now. I am glad too: this is much more enjoyable to me now. It has transformed quite a bit. I pretty much agree with the last taster. What was smoky and meaty before is pretty much gone, tannins are fine, and there is good acidity. It does benefit from decanting a fair amount. For me it started to settle in after an hour. The body is still medium, but it is more in balance with fresh acidity, and light tannins. Red cherry fruit (and berries, yes last taster), light chalky notes, and very light spice. Nice clean length too. Before it definitely needed meat IMO. Now after ample airing it is pleasant on its own, or with cheese, or again with meat, etc. I'll buy again and plan on sitting on them, at least for my taste. |

2005 Château La Vieille CureFronsac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
6/13/2020 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRI agree with most recent reviews. I had heard about corked bottles or premox, so I was concerned, but this bottle is flawless. Mostly I key into the more traditional Bordeaux flavors to it, even if it has also has some modern aspects. Many point out, so-called modern or traditional styles when young tend towards each other as they age. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised by this. It is a wine now that I enjoy. Resolved tannins, dark stewed fruit, but definitely earthy leathery notes laid over that. I do get the olive tapenade. Tell-tale Bordeaux notes that I enjoy. A bit of dirt in the glass. Good with food; but for Bdx fans, I found it enjoyable enough on its own due to very soft resolved tannins with some supple fruit. Heat, yes, but seems balanced still with acidity and supple fruit. In a good spot and quite enjoyable with a small steak dinner. The rest for dinner tomorrow. It seems to be holding up, suggesting it will keep for a while yet. I'll be pretty tempted to drink the second bottle sooner than later though. I forget the price I paid, but from memory this is quite a good value. I'll buy again. |

2006 Eric Morgat Savennières L'EnclosChenin Blanc more |
2/19/2017 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRMmm, delicious, poised, aged Savennières. Clear eye of deep gold-copper, shows its age. Notes from memory, subdued nose, cider, apple, some mineral. Lively enough acidity, but broad on the palate. A bit reminiscent of aged white Burgundy, but different flavor profile. Cider, yeast, stone, butter, white flowers. Very pleased with this. Will keep another bottle for a while. |

2014 Bonny Doon Vineyard Syrah Cuvée SplendideCentral Coast more |
2/17/2017 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRHmm...better review than latest ones. Opened (screw cap), and ready for business, and no "bubble gum". That one confuses me, I don't get it. This could be a dead-ringer for Southern Rhône Syrahs that I like. Aromatic and expressive nose, wet stones, earth, kirsch, blackberry, plum, some spice, a light bit of leather even, but mostly fruity notes. Maybe a bit of soapy flower petals, in a good way. Dark purple-crimson eye in the glass. Not a lot of tannin here. Some astringency on the finish, but pleasant and tart by the glass. Guessing it will shine with food too. Thumbs up, it exceeded my expectations - but, I paid $12, not $30+ it is normally priced at. Worth it either way. |

1/5/2017 - gnosis wrote: NRI was surprised that this wine seemed medium body and intensity, a bit hot at 14%, low tannin. I think it is at the end of it's drinking window. I think it was probably better young. Decent fruit, meat, smoke, red cherry fruit, but light fruit. Will drink other bottle now. Medium to lighter intensity. |

2012 D.E. Fleming Riesling Beginnings Paraiso EstateSanta Lucia Highlands more |
8/20/2016 - gnosis Likes this wine: NRA surprise, a close out of 2012 Riesling, but from Santa Lucia Highlands? Yes, and it is pretty good. 12% alc but still slightly sweet. It has aged sweet Riesling notes of baking spices and apple, yet still enough acid and verve to make it yummy. The acid is soft though. The nose is young-ish and bordering on petrol. I'd guess this was a Mosel with years on it. It is not highly complex or long, but pretty darn good. Hmmm, Riesling from Monterey? I am impressed. |
