Pronounced nose of red and black fruits, spices, toast, mushroom, forest. A lot of sediment and at bottom. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Drinking well now. Decanted 1 hour.

Fine Wines SG - Bordeaux 1990 Grand Cru Discovery Pack (Fine Wines SG): Medium garnet and significantly fading edges. Fairly intense red fruit aromas and a mint coolness. Some bite from tannins, fresh exuberant acids, some redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry, dried grass, nutmeg spices, cloves, pepper. Long and complex finish. Great!

Very pleasantly surprised by this second wine's depth and aromatics. Having tasted the Grand Vin a few years ago which was not open at all, my expectations were met with this pristine bottle. Cork almost fully soaked. Hazy crimson color to the wine, definite signs of evolution but no bricking at the edges. Masculine yet refined nose of leather, perfumed cassis, lilacs, black currants, some earth / cigar box and notes of coffee. Decanted for 30 minutes and drank over an hour. Very precise on the palate with leather, earth, cassis, dark berries and a velvety feel to it, very solid structure and backbone to this wine. Great power and finesse mid palate, tannins fully integrated in the long mocha finish. At its peak now, a true beauty to drink.

Still a beautiful wine at age 28. Lighter red color, no brown or orange at its edges. The nose was closed upon first opening. After being decanted for two hours, the nose had cassis and leather aromas. It was well balanced. There were virtually no tannins. It still had adequate fruit, with a silky texture. Medium body with a 20-30 second finish. I don't think it will improve with age, probably at or slightly past its peak

Slowly decanted, color is still pretty deep red with a bare bricking rim. Nose has floral and dried leaves note, fruits are aplenty. Quite concentrated on palate, good Mixture of oak and fruits, long finish and one would find it hard to resist another sip.

Julien S-M's 1990 Bordeaux (RSJ, London): Blind. Sweet, meaty fruit, floral and fragrant. Denser on the palate, a slight hint of dryness near the front of the finish before easing up and showing more rounded and slightly sweet fruit. Pav Rouge? There is a depth and density here, but it's not showing as well as at the Brighton Palmer bash. ***1/2

Ancora molto integro, bocca davvero vellutata e piacevole. Naso bello e ricco (anche se ovviamente non come il fratellone), il limite sia al naso che in bocca è il verde che si sente abbastanza.

Really bright red fruit notes with almost a sweet whiskey note. A real mouthful with plenty of quality. A certain refinemant and elegance. Not sure that Chateau Margaux puts as much into their second wine as they did back then given the modern price of the first wine. Other than the 2003 Pavillon Rouge, the four of five other Pavillon Rouges I have tasted since the 1990 haven't been remotely up to this wine.

Cork had soaked all the way through. Platable, but definitely off. A nice nose that turned immediately to oakey smoke, which dominated its flavor, too.

All in all, a very nice wine. Lively upon opening, but faded fast, dead in under an hour. Upon opening, smelled of barnyard and what the french call urine de chat, very mild berry fruits. Soft and smooth tannins, almost flabby.

Brighton Palmer Offline (Seven Dials Restaurant, Brighton): Blind. Lovely mid ruby to sanguine. Glorious minted potato nose, denser and more textured nose. Seems very serious in the mouth. Rich and flaverful. Dense. Very very classy. I like this a lot (but probably can't afford it!) Guessed 1989 Margaux.

Bought from a French supermarket for F99 in the early 90s and passively stored since. Good clear, bright, plum purple colour. Upfront and very attractive on the nose, with leather and animal aromas to the fore, and plump, sweet, silky secondary fruits - blueberries, plums and pear drops. Classic lead pencil, cranberry notes too. Textbook Margaux/Southern Medoc. A hint of something burnt (black treacle) creeping in after a while. Open, medium weight, but mouthfilling on the palate, with nice enlivening acidity and good length; sweet aftertaste. A very good wine that's really singing now!

Deep garnet, but shows a hint of age. A bit of earthiness. Nice on the palate, a lot of fruit left. Nicely integrated. Good bottle.
