2001 Harlan Estate The Maiden

Community Tasting Note

92 Points

Saturday, May 17, 2014 - I thought the wine showed too much alcohol and too little fruits drank two years ago. This showed a lot better.

Pop and pour and over three nights. Noticeable dusty note in the nose then cassis, blueberry jam, plum, a hint of oak and alcohol, cocoa, graphite, cappuccino and earth. Very good concentration not great, round and silky palate, cassis driven sweet fruit palate impression, earth/dust, strong presence of acidity and still noticeable but not obtrusive tannins. On third day, a hint of oxidative note at the end. IMO, some similarity to the Harlan but not as polished and layered. If you look for old school freshness, you won’t find it here.

My ratings tend to be quite close +-2 points but not in this case. A few different possibilities; bottle variation, two additional years of cellaring really helped or my impression varied drastically.

I highly recommend decanting for three to four hours as it drank the best on the second day.
