2007 E. Guigal Gigondas

Community Tasting Note

87 Points

Friday, December 28, 2012 - I've generally liked all the 2007 Rhones that I've taste and I was certainly looking forward to this one. The nose was very disappointing on opening with very little fruit apparent. In the mouth it was smooth with surprisingly uncomplicated tannins. There ware hints of strawberry and plum with a hint of forest floor. Finish medium short. Very restrained.
I decanted this overnight and by the second day it had opened up appreciably.
A fruit forward Rhone, this had great fruit character with a blend of red currants and strawberry. The savoury components were still a little lacking and the finish hadn't improved much. I was hoping that after 5 years this bottle would be approaching drinkability, I still think this needs a further three years to fully integrate.
