Monday, December 30, 2013 - Let me start off by saying that I REALLY wanted to like this as much as I remembered when visiting the tasting room. It is super dark purple, and lavendar colored. Very extracted with unctious full bodied texture which is flirting with the "syrupy" line. Nose of sweet stewed berries, fig compote, and wet earth. Ripe on the nose, and the palate was super ripe for a syrah. If tasted blind, I might have thought it was a jammy zin! I really love Epoch wines, but this was just over the top extracted and jammy. It lacked any finesse and was almost like a cocktail. Seriously though, I can respect, and even enjoy, the higher alcohol wines, but 16.4% was a bit much. Although I have to say there was no alcohoal burn... It was a well made wine in terms of structure, composure, and depth. Just too ripe for me... Or maybe my preferences are changing?
