Monday, April 16, 2012 - Very deep yellow color, almost golden, reminding me more of heavily oaked Chardonnays than Rieslings. Incredibly charming nose with floral sweetness, honey, almonds and sweet citrus. Overall impression is slightly reserved and elegant, not that opulent. On the mouth the wine is big but not oversized, offering acidic spiciness, some honey, a touch of slightly Champagne-y leesiness, dry wood aromas, overripe peaches and fruit stones and a hint of minerality. The 14 g/l RS in prefectly in balance with the acid and the mouthfeel is med-bodied; it is impossible to say whether this wine would be dry or off-dry. The wine finishes with lime and minerality, some honey and a touche of brioche leesiness.

Very convincing, complex, balanced and uncompromising Riesling for pure enjoyment. Will easily pair with food, but probably fares best on its own, when one can concentrate on the different aromatic layers of olfactory complexity of the wine. Will easily age for at least a decade more. I'm convinced of van Volxem's style: this must be one of the best young Rieslings I've ever had. A bargain at under 40€.
