2001 Yalumba Shiraz The Octavius

Community Tasting Note

Thursday, May 14, 2015 - PnP as a backup bottle. Opens to very dark ruby, no sign of age. Initial aromas are cedar closet, dust, cinnamon, graham cracker. After 5 minutes in the glass, raisin, soil, fresh boysenberry. Served at 58F, this is fresh (acids), though the fruits definitely run to the (very) dark side; mature on the palate, not very complex at all. Drinks like a mature (5eme) claret, not a Syrah - at this temperature at least. Oh well, worked with my grilled Prime filet, so the rest is history. Will save some for tomorrow and will update if significantly changed. 13,5% abv (fully resolved), drink now.

After/as it warmed, some mature port notes, with fig and prune, mixed with a fringe of VA. An off bottle? Sure hope so.

** update: day 2** wildly more interesting, with some milk chocolate and mint mixed with black and blue berries; even a touch gamey (no figpaste, prunes); vanilla bean spice and some dusty soil notes. Well put together, this one. Nice.
Probably best to use an Ah-So to remove the cork.

5/16/2015 10:30:00 PM - Great note and perseverance. I just found a bottle of this in my cellar not recorded in CT. I just might audoze this or pop and drink next day. Thanks for the analysis.
