Saturday, October 20, 2012 - I was so looking forward to this after being really impressed the first time I tried it nearly 12 months ago but it has gone backwards into a closed, sullen phase. Double-decanted for 3 hours and then decanted for another 2 hours before drinking. The cork looks like it was put in yeaterday. Colour is a dusky, transparent velvet red. Nose is classic oak and vanilla pod Rioja and some vanilla custard.....then red cherries and red plums. Palate is a high acidic initial attack but quickly segues into sharp red cherry then a dry fresh sawn box-wood and oaky finish. Very young...very high-toned, acetone, nail varnish remover and the merest hint of alluring red/black cherry fruit with more time in the glass. Distinct vanilla oak aftertaste. Has entered a sullen phase....... some impressive length develops after 2+ hours in the glass but it remains like a high-octave church bell that needs a lot more time to tone down. Stoppered and vacuumed all but one glass to see if another 24 hours would help. On the second day it has turned from transparent to deep ruby red opaque (how's that?) and has also put on weight on the nose....now deeper and more balanced primaries of oak and red/black cherry. Palate is now also deeper and more rounded and with some coffee bean coming through but still sharply young. I would leave for a couple of years whilst it sulks....but I'm more convinced than before that this could grow into a great wine in 5-10 years' time, even though I scored it 92 last year when it had more immediate charm of precosity.
