Community Tasting Note

Sunday, May 22, 2005 - Haven't opened one of these since shortly after release 5 years ago, and it was a bit of a disappointment. Very dark garnet-red; briary, smoky, gamey nose with the dark fruits pretty well buried. On the palate, very dense and extracted, with smoke, oak and earth dominating the fruit again. Most disappointing was a pronounced dill/bell pepper streak of flavor from the attack carrying almost through to the finish, really detracting from a bottle that seems to have a ton of structure and raw material. This flavor was not at all corky, nor was it that sort of green berry, stemmy, or underripe note one sometimes gets. Overall, the oak, smoke and dill just stomped all over whatever fruit might be in this. With two bottles left, I wonder if this will ever come into balance.
