90 Points

Sunday, February 22, 2015 - What a nose, as it pulls you in with brooding, dark fruit and balsamic tones and then leaves you guessing as a whiff of fresh mint adds whimsical finesse. There’s a mix of fruit here, showing blackberry, blueberry, and dark cherry; all complemented by earth tones of graphite and crushed stone. On the palate, a dark, silky veil enveloped the senses, with black fruit taking second place to its notes of savory herbs, dark wood, and earth. Part of me craved for more acidity here, yet there’s something alluring about it’s weighty textures. It finished with deep wood tones and plum, yet very little in the way of structure. Instead, this goes down all to easy.

I’m stumped here. I typically score a wine on its nose, palate, finish and then overall performance. Those scores are then complied together and averaged out. Here, the nose was an easy 97 points. Yet on the palate it took a dive to 90 and then the finish to 88. The overall experience is hard to gauge because I wanted so much more on the palate. I’m calling this a 90-point wine, with high hopes that this is an odd bottle and unrepresentative of it’s typical performance.

On day two I found more red fruit tones, with a distinct note of pine, woodland stems and hints of cedar. More energy showed on the palate, as its dense black fruit had backed off to a large degree, leaving wild berry and spicy floral notes. It finished fresh with focused red-toned fruit. It’s certainly more enjoyable on the palate than the previous night, but the price you pay is in the loss of the outstanding bouquet.
