Friday, March 25, 2011 - Anyway I have been drinking KB Pinot since 2003 when they were available retail in Connecticut at $28.99 (no shipping!) and have had all their vintages except the acclaimed 2004 when I was not on their mailing list. Each year as others do I try to decide are they still worth it? Well I received the 2009 allocation and as usual I start with the Sonoma bottling as I find the RRV needs more time. Decanted this for an hour and have great news to report: "the Heat is gone". As those of us who taste the KB wines often note the alcohol can dominate, especially when the wine warms up but I think Messrs. Kosta and Browne have tamed the heat in the 2009 vintage and crafted a beautifully balanced wine.
A nice translucent purple color from the decanter the nose was a pronounced raspberry compote with vanilla overtones. The oak was very well integrated and there was sweet fruit and a long lingering finish. What I found about this vintage was a very balanced wine that I find very encouraging. I have found at times that some vintages '06 comes to mind these wines can be a challenge but everything seems to have come together nicely in 2009. Excellent!
