Saturday, January 13, 2007 - Not expecting much, and under the impression that good cooks need to be rewarded along the way, I served it to my wife and I while we were preparing Christmas eve dinner in the kitchen in the afternoon, her sipping away while cracking walnuts for a stuffing, and me taking "poyferre breaks" at different stages of preparation of a goose and a gratin. You probably know the end of the story: By the time the dinner was finished, no more poyferre. The dinner wine that followed (better year, better rating) was a disappointment by comparison--the cook's had drunk away the best beforehand. Given that 1997 was definitely and off-year for Bordeaux, I was rather surprised at how good this bottle was, and how far it had evolved. The color was thick purple-lilac with a ruby shimmer, and had a very strong nose of red currant, black cherrries, cassis, and black berries. On the palate, alot of melted licorice and truffels, but not as much thickness and concentration as other years; the tannins are nevertheless hewy, and the end has alot of power, with a somewhat bitter last note. A classic, and one of the best 1997s I have tasted., although the 1998 should be better. Drink now. Decanted for 6 hours beforehand. Large sediment particles in the bottle.
