90 Points

Saturday, April 3, 2010 - Very interesting and complex bottle. Strong oak and earth, dirt, & herbs on the nose... no sweetness/fruit happening there. Structure was decent with mild heat right from the pour. Extremely smooth. It was slightly disappointing right out of the bottle, though. It had almost no fruit to it; very smooth, but very flat on the taste. Once it got some air time, the fruit really started to come through. Aeration of this wine was a big help, too. After sufficient air time, you get oak, earth, and a little mint leaf at first, then on the back of your pallet the fruit sings. The complexity of the wine was beautiful with a somewhat long finish. The total lack of fruit up front hurt it for me, but that's just my personal taste. I really enjoyed the experience of this wine, but I don't think there's much QPR at $70 a bottle from the winery. However, for $30 in a wine wootoff, it is definitely worth it! I think cellaring this wine for a 2-3 more years will improve it a lot, but I don't think I'd want to sit it longer than that. I think this wine is something every budding wine connoisseur should experience.
