Friday, December 13, 2013 - Four Birthdays and a Wedding Anniversary (Nicolas Restaurant, Teck Lim Street, Singapore): Pretty enjoyable - while not a blockbuster, it is certainly a notch up from the last time I tried it in 2008. Unlike some of the Pontet-Canet of recent years, this was quite a throwback to old-school Bordeaux, with a very classical smells and textures and flavours. The nose was a case in point, with its tea leaves and tobacco and roasted capsicums drifting through a light core of cassis and black cherry aromas. Classic Bordeaux. Same thing on the palate too, with bright acidity and slightly powdery tannins forming a nice frame for clear flavours of cassis and black cherries ringed with smoky tobacco and a little meatiness. Those slightly green, roasted capsicum notes picked up on the nose showed up again in the back-palate, where they mingled with a gentle spiciness as the wine slid away into a soft, velvety finish. A good wine, but not a great once. While I did enjoy the less modern stylings here, I must say that this missed some of the lovely depth and purity that this house has achieved in its wines in the past 8-10 vintages. In fact, it seemed a little short-handed next to a very young, but very complete bottle of 2008 Hosanna served alongside. Still though, this was drinking quite nicely and I enjoyed it pretty much.
