89 Points

Saturday, November 10, 2007 - Allowed to breathe in the bottle for 2 hours prior to decanting at restaurant. Deep ruby color. Nose offers a beautifully pure expression of black and red fruits, but did not find any cassis, leather or tobacco that some posters noted. In the mouth, the wine is still primary with pure blackberry and raspberry, finishing with a hint of fine black pepper. Has not yet developed typical Pauillac secondary characteristics. Medium-bodied, some astringent tannin dissipated after the wine had been opened for 4 hours. Finish is relatively short at 15-20 seconds. Overall the wine is fairly well integrated at this time, but needs additional time--perhaps another 3-5 years to reach maturity. This wine should merit a higher score in the future, but I was expecting more now based on Jancis Robinson's October 2007 re-review (18/20 -- tying or besting most of the 01 first growths). Simply does not have the elegance, depth or power of a first or second growth. Certainly a very good buy at $30, though it is difficult to find this wine for under $55 now. At a similar price point, much prefer the 98 Pichon Baron.
