90 Points

Thursday, September 29, 2005 - Did the unthinkable last night and opened a 2001 St Hugo Cabernet. I have just started drinking my 1994’s (drinking very well I might add), but bought a six-pack of the 2001’s on release and I hadn’t tried them. Very deep, ruby red colour. The nose consisted of plum and blackcurrent aromas, but also had that distinctive cabernet green leafy element in the background which tended to disappear after some air. Good cabernet varietal flavours, with black fruits and a fine tannin structure. Big wine, good use of oak and very balanced but as expected needs time to settle down and soften. Like most St Hugo’s give it another 5-8 years.
