Saturday, August 16, 2014 - Popped and poured, followed approximately 2 hours. Garnet in colour, showing a moderate brick. Interesting having this alongside the 1996; showing a touch less fruit, but really similarly, just a few more years along the aging curve with more tertiary aromatics. The nose shows black currant, earth, dried tobacco, celery seed, leather, undergrowth, and mushroom. A truly classic nose. On the palate, this is where the wine falters a bit. Slightly less concentration than the 1996 and a shorter, slightly astringent finish. Still a lovely wine, but not at the level of the 1996. Optimal drinking now.
