93 Points

Thursday, January 29, 2015 - Joel's Birthday Party (The Palace, Mission, SF): Double decanted. Color is a medium garnet with bricking appropriate for age; nose with subtle complexity of mint, bell pepper, then blackberries; palate is full bodied, well integrated tannins, perfect structure, elegant plush mouthfeel, fresh acidity throughout, flavors are a combination of light to medium black fruits combined with slight green vegetal, pleasing but also a bit subtle; finish is medium length and clean, refreshing, with some residual fruit. Overall this shows the balance and mouthfeel that I expect from a Pichon Lalande with a nice expressive nose and balanced palate, but the fruit is a bit thin through the palate and the complexity is only moderate on the nose. An interesting wine recognizable in its own style (plush elegant mouthfeel being its best trait) with some interesting characteristics, but falls short of world-class. Based on the fruit showing today, drink up within the next few years. 92-93
Update: 2-3 hours slow-ox and retasted at dinner, and now showing more classic early maturity bordeaux with more intensity on the nose and palate. Solid 93+ with room to last.
Day 2: fading and a bit oxidized today. Not as good today.

3/24/2015 8:33:00 PM - Excellent review! I am finishing a glass of it now, five hours after opening and decanting. I bought it on release in 1992 and it has aged wonderfully. It's still rich and full, about as good as Pauillac (or Bordeaux) gets...enjoy!
