90 Points

Tuesday, December 6, 2005 - After opening a badly corked 1983 Pichon Lalande, I pulled the 1989 as a backup. Upon first opening, I was hit by a blast of brett. Wow, this was stunningly bretty, more so than any other bottle I have had! For about an hour, this was almost overwhelming with strong barnyard tastes on both the nose and palate. However, with air this improved a ton, and the wine rose up to balance against the brett. Graphite pokes through on the nose, and this takes on more of a black, brooding Pauillac impression although lightly tinged by some cola. The palate gets more youthful with time, big, black fruit, lightly sweet, a wafting bit of tobacco, silky yet gripping tannins, good persistence. This is nice Bordeaux although lacking the plushness that this wine can sometimes deliver. Still, it is an excellent bottle.
