Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - In a word: WOW! I know that Montrose is on a string in recent vintages, but this 2001 was far better than expected. Dark ruby color (but not purple black as some other, more modern wines). Right after opening, the nose was a bit unformed, but a little sip already confirmed what was to come after decanting... After 2 hours in the decanter, this wine really blossomed. This is not a modern, fruity wine. It sported already a rather complex nose, with a melange of dark fruits, tobacco, truffels, wood spice - very deep and exciting. BTW, I haven't detected any of the barnyard aromas Montrose is (was) known for in recent vintages of this wine. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, almost chewy, but nevertheless retains its sense of elegance (for a St. Estephe). The tannins spread over the entire palate and release wave after wave of dark fruits, spice and licorice. Surprisingly low in acidity, but not at all flabby, which seems to make it already approachable. Nevertheless I feel that this wine will soon shut down hard and only emerge after several years. In sum, a fantastic expression of ripe cabernet and a great Bordeaux from this underhyped vintage. I had only two bottles, but now I will need to look for more! Drink 2010 to 2030
