96 Points

Saturday, May 23, 2015 - (Decanted two hours.) It has been nearly two years since I drank this wine. It still has an amazingly dark red/blue color that looks more like Californian cabernet than French pinot noir. With much coaxing, it delivers up rich aromas of dark berries, strawberries, mocha, funk and menthol. There is also a pleasing perfumed floral note that adds another layer of complexity and interest. Full-bodied, it has a rich and ripe mouthfeel but without a trace of sweetness. The correspondingly big flavors of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, dark chocolate, beef, mint, minerals (graphite and gravel) and moist soil are beautifully defined (or restrained?) by a tangy spine of uplifting acidity. There is also a vibrant tension between ripeness and freshness, density and lightness, that persists through the long, mineral-infused finish. Though essentially fine-grained, the tannins are formidable and will require ten or more years to abate. 96 points.
