Monday, December 24, 2012 - From magnum, with Christmas Eve dinner. The soft cork required finesse and an ah-so to extract. I opened this mid-day to see if it required decanting then struggled to keep my hands off it until dinner.
From the get-go, a perfectly aged, medium-bodied Bdx, all sweet tobacco, leather, and soft fruit - no decanting needed. Still garnet in the glass with slight amber at the rim. Surprisingly minimal sediment. Fully resolved tannins, lovely bottle sweetness, precision, balance, and fantastic texture - just a pleasure to drink. My palate is always better early in the day, and I would say the first glass was the best - with air, the wine retained its appeal but definitely lost a bit of its focus through the evening.
We don't drink a lot of Bdx these days, but this was a wonderful reminder of just how sublime it can be.
